Search Engine Marketing and Social Media Advice

These days everybody is having conversations about search engine marketing and social media. By this, I don’t mean that they’re talking about two discrete things; they’re talking about how they are able to use social media for search engine optimization. For a while-essentially, since social media came into existence-people have been treating these two things as part of the same general family (online marketing), but, in reality, they should be viewed as to be two sides of the same coin.

Search engines have been making use of social media factors to figure out what webpages should be ranked highly on their results pages. In a nutshell, they used to heavily monitored Twitter to accomplish this. This is because most Twitter profiles are public, whereas most Facebook profiles are the opposite (and, as a reminder, search engines don’t have the ability to index private profiles.

However, this has not been the case recently; a few months ago, Google stopped utilizing Facebook posts at all, switching over entirely to their own social networking site, Google+. The reason for this is obvious; Microsoft is part owner of Facebook and owns Bing, so they’re direct competitors. However, since Facebook posts have so far played such a limited role in search engine marketing that nobody really take notice.

So, what you may now be thinking; how do I utilize social media to improve my own search engine marketing strategy. First of all, what you need is having people Tweet your keywords alongside the URL you’re trying to rank. Obviously, you don’t want just anybody to Tweet it (although, it certainly doesn’t harm you). You want a big person with tons of engaged followers. It’s a hard mission, but it’s what you have to do.

Also, Google+ complicates things a bit. Google+ and Google are so highly integrated that you need to take heed. Unfortunately, the partnership is so new that we don’t have too many hints available yet, but check back soon!
